Raleigh-bound flight delayed after cabin fills with smoke

RALEIGH, N.C. -

An AirTran flight from Atlanta to Raleigh was delayed Saturday after the plane's cabin filled with smoke prior to push-off.

AirTran Flight 649 was scheduled to takeoff from Atlanta at 10:10 a.m. Saturday, but passengers were forced to deplane after the plane's cabin filled with smoke.

The plane's captain said the engine that powers the air conditioning had an internal failure and caused smoke to be pumped into the cabin.

Everyone on the plane was able to safely exit the aircraft. AirTran arranged a new plane for the flight, which took off at 10:55 a.m.

The flight arrived at RDU at 12:06 p.m., 32 minutes after it was scheduled to arrive.
