Georgetown vows to continue after devastating fire

GEORGETOWN, S.C. -

There is still a lot of work to be done before Front Street in Georgetown is anything like it used to be, but that is not stopping people from enjoying the downtown.

Thursday evening smoke was still rising from the rubble that once was the 700 block of Front Street in Georgetown.

But that did not mean the downtown was not open for business.

"You'll end up seeing more support for Georgetown's downtown area than you've ever seen before," said Timothy Lee who drove down for the day from Pawleys Island.

Everywhere you looked people were enjoying the evening; many walking along the docks or having dinner on the waterfront.

Sally Swineford, the owner of the River Room Restaurant, said even though they just got all their utilities back Thursday they are more than happy to be open.

"This is a great community and in situations like these you can really feel the spirit of the community," she said. "Everybody comes together. Everybody's been so supportive," she added.

But not all the guests at the River Room were from the area.

"As soon as I could today my husband and I got in the car and drove here," said Debi Ridlehoover.

Ridlehoover says she grew up in Georgetown, but now lives in Spartanburg.

She says she drove nearly five hours to be in town for one reason

"We came here to have dinner so we could support some of the local businesses," said Ridlehoover.

And after she was done dinner, she drove five hours back.

Ridlehoover says it will take time, but with the community banding together the hole that was left by the fire on the town, both physically and emotionally will be filled in no time.

And the town is not missing a beat.

The "Bridge 2 Bridge Run" and the Wooden Boat Show are still going on as planned as well as a concert scheduled for next Thursday, Oct. 3, at 5:30 in Francis Marion Park.
