NC Medical Board investigates Fayetteville doctor

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

A doctor who has worked at offices in the Sandhills area has agreed to stop practicing medicine while the state medical board reviews him.

Dr. Aaron Gootman is affiliated with six clinics of Pain and Laser Center. Those locations include offices in Fayetteville, Southern Pines, Sanford, Laurinburg, Lumberton and Whiteville. All six locations of the Pain and Laser Center remain open with a different doctor.

As the state reviews Gootman, he has signed an interim non-practice agreement. Under the agreement, Gootman is not allowed to practice medicine or "perform any act that requires a license to practice" until the investigation is completed. Although he's agreed to not practice medicine while he's being investigated, that does not mean his license has been suspended.

The medical board won't say exactly why Gootman is under investigation, but a spokesperson for the board said if he violates the current agreement or if a significant problem is discovered, Gootman could lose is medical license.

Records from the state medical board show the board also warned Gootman last year, saying patients at his offices weren't being examined by the person prescribing them with pain killers.

The regional manager at the Fayetteville office of Pain and Laser Center said the offices will soon be under new ownership and management. She said Gootman's absence is not affecting the clinics.
