Kareem Abdul Jabbar speaks to kids at Fort Bragg

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -

Basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar visited Fort Bragg Thursday on a book tour and to talk about education and following your dreams.

Abdul Jabbar visited children at the Fort Bragg School as part of a tour for his book, "Sasquatch in the Paint." The book talks about the effects of bullying and racism.

"Kids sometime because of peer pressure end up doing the wrong thing because they think it makes them part of the accepted group," Abdul Jabbar said. "There is no one accepted group."

Abdul Jabbar said despite his father being station at Fort Bragg, he would not play basketball in the South.

"I couldn't go to college in the South because all of the conferences were segregated," he said. "There were only two schools who tried to recruit me. University of Houston and Wake Forest.

Abdul Jabbar's parents met while his father was stationed at Fort Bragg during World War Two.
