Officials say a young boy who turned 9-years-old just 6 days ago died after hitting a tractor trailer in Newberry County.
Troopers say it happened at 6:35 p.m. Monday evening on Church Street just outside of the town of Whitmire.
The boy, who had lived with his family in Surfside Beach until moving about a year ago, was airlifted to Richland Memorial Hospital where he later died.
The child, who was later identified as Bennett Dalton, was not wearing a helmet.
"This is truly a tragic loss for this family and community," Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton says. "Our prayers are with Bennetts' loved ones and friends during this very difficult time."
Troopers told WLTX-TV that Dalton was riding his bike out of a driveway and onto Church Street when he was hit by a tractor trailer.
Officials say that Dalton was airlifted to Palmetto Heath Richland for treatment, and died just after 9 p.m.
His family is trying to cope with the tragedy.
"Just wanna thank everyone for all the calls, text, prayers, and thoughts," wrote Scott Dalton, his dad, on Facebook.
"Today our son that just turned 9 on the 18th, Benett Dalton, went to be with the Lord. He had a accident on his bike today with severe injuries. We have a long road ahead of us so please continue to pray for our family I love you all and I LOVE YOU FOREVER SON."
No charges have been filed.
The death and crash remains under investigation.
