Ala House speaker calling for religious freedom support

Posted: Updated:

Alabama House of Representative Speaker Mike Hubbard is one of several legislators who have started an online petition in support of religious freedom. Hubbard, from Auburn, wrote an opinion piece Tuesday published in the OA Now newspaper.

Earlier this year, a Gallup listed the state as tied with Utah for the second most religious state in the U.S., behind first ranked Mississippi.

In the opinion piece, Hubbard writes about the efforts of a Wisconsin based group: Freedom From Religion Foundation.

He says the FFRF organization began targeting Alabama.

Hubbard calls the organization's efforts a "war on prayer".

He says the FFRF is the organization that protested a privately organized prayer caravan for schools in Cullman County and also protested that Cullman County's teacher training was scheduled to be held in facilities being provided by a church.

Hubbard says the Alabama House will continue to begin each session with a public prayer.

He and some of his colleagues have created an online petition for constituents to show their support. If you'd like to see that petition, you can view it here (external Web site).
