"I haven't been drinking": That's an excuse perhaps most commonly used by drunk people who have, in fact, been drinking.
But, researchers in Texas say that someone can feel intoxicated without consuming any alcohol.
They studied one east Texas man who felt drunk for five years.
Some doctors believed he was a closet drinker, but a research team at Panola College discovered "Auto Brewery Syndrome". Essentially, some people experience a yeast infection that causes fermentation in their intestines. The study indicated that a specific combination of glucose and high carbs increased the patient's Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) to well above .08.
"He was dizzy and feeling unusual, his wife is actually a nurse," says Dr. Barbara Cordell. "She was suspicious ..that he smelled like alcohol and seemed like he was drunk and intoxicated. So he said he hadn't been drinking, she believed him, I believed him, So, we really tried to figure out what was going on with him."
The solution was simple: An anti-yeast medication.
