Sampson County sheriff says 11-year-old girl was killed

CLINTON, N.C. -

An 11-year-old girl's suspicious death is being investigated as a homicide, the Sampson County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.

Deputies were called out to a home on Hairr Lane on Sept. 6 for an unresponsive juvenile. When authorities arrived, they found an 11-year-old girl unconscious inside the home.

The victim has been identified as McKenzie Sessoms of Salemburg.

After reviewing medical reports from the medical examiner's officer, the Sampson County Sheriff's Office has ruled Sessoms' death a homicide.

According to her obituary, Sessoms was a 5th grader at Salemburg Elementary School. Neighbors on Hairr Lane said she lived with her father and two older brothers.

Sheriff's detectives have not said how they believe Sessoms was killed, and they nave not named any suspects. No other information about the case has been released at this time. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 910-592-4141.
