Diamond Jags Add 13 In Offseason

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Head Coach Jason Eller stayed busy after taking the helm of the Jaguar Baseball program on Monday, July 1, signing 13 players for the 2014 Diamond Jags campaign.

"We are excited to be able to piece together our first signing class at GRU," Eller said. "It was a frenzy to not only recruit these young men, but to admit them into student-athletes. We feel like we have laid a solid foundation with some helium-type players to help build the future of Jaguar Baseball."

All but one of the new signees are in-state student-athletes, hailing from the metro Atlanta and North Atlanta area. Two sets of brothers join the Jags' rosters. Identical twins Joey (C/RHP) and Mitchell Szwec (RHP), from Marietta, Ga., hope to boost the performance on the mound and behind the plate.

Heath Durand, a junior transfer from Georgia Southern, will also aide the bullpen and his brother Tanner Durand looks to make his mark as a walk-on freshman at first base. Connor Gilbert (3B/1B), a sophomore transfer from Gordon College, and CJ Reed, the incoming junior from Mercer, will strengthen the offense and Eller sees them playing a role in the season.

Tristan Jones will split time on the mound and in the infield and lefty Tyler Grooms will split the outfield and bullpen. Pitching prospects Tyler Brown, Kyle McCreery, Tyler Roberts, Will Robertson and Oakley Whitesel round out the new group.

After a 10-38 season last year with only three wins in the Peach Belt Conference, the Jaguars look for improvement from their new cast as well as from the crew of returners. Fall practice and inter-squad games began in early September and will last until Sunday, Oct. 20.
