Law enforcement gather to talk mass shooter response

Posted: Updated:

Gun violence in public places has been at the forefront of public discussion this week after a shooting in Washington and a man died after a showdown with police in Durham.

On Thursday, crime fighters from across the country gathered in Raleigh to plan how to deal with these dangerous situations.

"If they don't realize now it can happen here - -in my small town -- in their small town, it can happen anywhere," said Sheriff Greg Champagne of St. Charles Parish, La.

The sheriff was in North Carolina, among others, to share what he has learned with law enforcement at the Governor's Crime Commission.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said his men and other emergency workers are well-trained, but there are blaring areas of vulnerability -- specifically in the schools.

"Do we have room for improvement? Absolutely," Harrison said. Harrison said some school officials are "not ready to respond when something happens."

"We need to practice the active shooter drills [just as often as fire drills]."

After the Sandy Hook school shooting Gov. Pat McCrory launched a safer schools initiative to reevaluate school safety. Police said Thursday  it has helped, and state leaders have been receptive to their needs.
