Leaders of group calling for change in Durham PD to speak at city council meeting

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

A group claiming there's discrimination inside the Durham Police Department plan to voice their concerns at a city council meeting Thursday.

A defense attorney who was hit by a stray bullet in his yard, David Hall, is on the agenda Thursday afternoon to speak at City Hall regarding Police Chief Jose Lopez. Hall is part of the group "Fade" which protested earlier this week against what they call discriminatory behavior in the police department.

Chief Lopez is the subject of a civil rights discrimination complaint filed by Assistant Chief Winslow Forbes, who claims Chief Lopez made discriminatory remarks, including that a man deserved to get shot because he was a public defender. Durham's city manager found no evidence of discrimination in a recent investigation, and Chief Lopez issued an apology earlier in September, saying he doesn't recall saying the things he's accused of.

The group of protestors, including David Hall, held signs demanding a change in leadership in the police department.

"The communities that are affected by the disparate treatment will have a voice so that Durham can be uplifted, so that we can all benefit from a better Durham," said Hall.

The Durham Police Department has not issued a comment about the protest.
