Highlands toddler in hospital after mower accident

Posted: Updated:

It has happened again, another lawn mower accident involving a child.

The 2-year-old Lake Placid boy, was injured when he was run over by a lawnmower.  He is at Tampa General Hospital Thursday in critical but stable condition.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office said the boy's mother Maria Isabel Huerto Bello, 23, accidentally ran the boy, Anthony Meza, over while mowing the grass.

Anthony was riding his bike when Bello put the mower in reverse and ran over his leg.

The boy was flown to Tampa General Hospital later with serious leg injuries, Highlands County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Nell Frewin-Hays said.

Doctors said, he is in critical but stable condition and may require more surgery.

Gema Eufracio is a friend who lives across the street.

"They are good people," she said in Spanish.

She also said, "She's always holding him or caring for him, she really doesn't take him out that often."

Eufracio said she's heartbroken over this whole accident because she could tell how much this woman loved her son.

"I feel so sorry for her as a mother. Because it's her son and now this happened to her…it's surprising!"

Sheriff Susan Benton said, "Right now they're holding out hope that the child will be able to keep the leg and the leg will not need to be amputated. But at this point it's one of those wait and see type of events."

The sheriff says there is no sign that the boy was ever neglected or abused, and the parents have been very cooperative in the investigation.

A detective is staying with the parents to provide support and encouragement.
