We have a winner! The $400 million winning Powerball ticket was sold at Murphy USA on Augusta Road in Lexington, South Carolina. That's about 50 miles from Augusta or about 30 miles from Aiken.
The cash option comes out to be $233 million. In addition to the jackpot, South Carolina had a one million ticket sold in Hampton, and another in Georgia.
Second place won't win you the crown, or the White House. But, for many lottery winners, second place will soon win you a whole lotta cash.
America has lottery fever, the jackpots soaring. In 2002, the biggest prize was $331 million. Now we're seeing numbers like 587 million, 590 million, even $656 million dollars!
But next month, the mega millions rules will change the *consolation* prizes will balloon.
Right now, if you hit 5 out of the 6 numbers, you win $250,000. In October, that number will soar to anywhere between a million and $5 million.
And more good news: your odds of winning a prize of any kind will improve from 1 in 40 to 1 in 15.
Suddenly, coming in second doesn't look so bad.
