State lawmakers to introduce bill to protect unborn children

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Remee Jo Lee knows what its like to lose an unborn child.

Her boyfriend gave her a pill used to cause an abortion, telling her at the time it was an anti-biotic.

Lee said, "I was deprived of my choice for my baby I will not back down I am here for myself and for all of the other victims to spread awareness and to prevent this from happening to other women."

Lee was joined by two state lawmakers, who plan to introduce legislation called the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act".

State Representative Larry Ahern is one of the sponsors.

He said, "Sometimes out of something so devastating as this some good can come of it and I would hope that would be the support of the house and the senate and the governor for this legislation."

John Andrew Welden plead guilty to two federal charges related to the death of Lee's unborn child.

The two state lawmakers say they'll sponsor the bill to prevent what happened to Lee from happening to others..

State Senator Kelli Stargell another sponsor said, "I think we need to send as message to everybody that this baby is within this woman... and any damage you do to a woman you have done to this baby, you've done to two lives not just one."

Senator Stargell was quick to point out, this is not an issue about abortion.

It is about a woman's right to give birth.

Stargell added, "We actually have provisions in this legislation that says if a person is choosing to elect an abortion you can't prosecute someone for that, so it basically is someone who has been a victim of violence and if that choice was taken from her."

Lee says she's still recovering from her loss  She supports any changes in Florida's law.

"I am here to give my voice and my support in the passage of the Unborn Victims in Violence Act in Florida." added Lee.

The bill won't be introduced into the legislature until next year, but its sponsors are hopeful it will be pass.

In the meantime, Weldon will be sentenced in December.
