TIA to close main runway Monday for one month

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

On Monday, September 23, Tampa International Airport will begin a runway maintenance project requiring the closure of Runway 1L/19R, which is the main runway, for one month.

This is routine work that must be done every 15 years to keep the runway in good condition according to a release from TIA.

The runway is located on the west side of the airport adjacent to the Veteran's Expressway. Crews will also perform miscellaneous concrete maintenance on other parts of the airfield.

As a result of the closure, aircraft will take off and land on our secondary runway, Runway 1R/19L.

Officials will work closely with Air Traffic Control and air carriers to minimize use of this runway on a regular basis because of takeoff and landing patterns that send planes over residential areas.

During the maintenance period, people who live and work around the airport will notice an increase in aircraft noise throughout the day.

The project is expected to be complete on or around October 23rd.

More information on the runway maintenance project can be found on the airport website www.TampaAirport.com.
