Negative tone of governor's race could impact voter turnout

ROANOKE -

If you plan on watching television in the next six weeks, get ready for plenty more negative advertising.

It's taking over the Virginia governor's race, with Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Democrat Terry McAuliffe launching seemingly endless attacks against each other, possibly alienating voters come November.

We asked Hollins University Political Science Professor Dr. Ed Lynch if it will impact voter turnout.

"Absolutely," Lynch said. "But I'm not sure that either campaign is too concerned about that."

Lynch added that neither campaign is making a major push for independent voters, instead focusing on motivating their own party.

"It will decrease turnout among the more moderate voters, but I'm not sure that they're the deciding factor anymore," he said. "The deciding factor in elections increasingly in this Commonwealth and in the country is who gets there most fired up voters to come to the polls."

But even that could be an up hill battle for the campaigns.

While the latest polls have McAuliffe in the lead, the like ability of both candidates is very low.

In its September poll, the bi-partisan firm Purple Strategies found McAuliffe and Cuccinelli with like ability ratings below 30 percent.
