Local Teen Headed for Pebble Beach

Posted: Updated:

Augusta, GA (September 16, 2013) – The First Tee of Augusta is sending Jason Murphy to compete in the 2013 Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, an official Champions Tour event that will be held September 27-29 and televised internationally on Golf Channel.

Murphy will join 80 other participants from The First Tee chapters for the event, which is in its 10th year. Murphy was selected by a national panel of judges who evaluated playing ability and comprehension of the life skills and character education learned through their involvement with The First Tee. Almost 150 applications were submitted.

Jason Murphy, 17 is a Senior at Westside High School where he is a member of the Executive Council and Prom Committee.  He hosts and produces the Westside High School Morning Show and plays in the number one spot on the golf team.  He carried their team all the way to state last season.  Jason received the Coaches Award for outstanding leadership and golfing ability.  Jason is the son of Dawn Love.

Murphy and the other juniors will be teamed with 81 Champions Tour players and 162 amateurs as they compete for the pro-junior title at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Del Monte Golf Course. Play will be conducted on Pebble Beach Golf Links and Del Monte Golf Course on Friday and Saturday, and final round will be played on Pebble Beach on Sunday.

"We are delighted that Jason will be representing The First Tee of Augusta.  He is a wonderful young man who has been part of The First Tee of Augusta family for 6 years. Jason is a positive role model for his peers. He exemplifies our core values, and has invested many hours at our chapter as a participant and over 700 hours as volunteer over the years.  He is a very good golfer, so we think he has a great chance to bring home the winning trophy!" says The First Tee of Augusta Executive Director Jill Brown.

"Having the honor of representing my chapter and participating in The First Tee Open is a dream come true. Being a part of the most prestigious First Tee opportunity is very humbling and I am very grateful for being chosen. It still hasn't sunk in that I will be playing the famed Pebble Beach golf course. It feels so surreal just thinking about it. I am very excited and I hope to bring back The First Tee Open trophy for Augusta and my chapter", says Murphy.

The First Tee of Augusta is one of 188 chapters around the country and in select international locations. Serving the CSRA since April of 2001, more than 5,000 young people have been served through chapter programs.
