Golden Apple: Marina Zamor

Posted: Updated:

Marina Zamor teaches 4th and 5th grade Language Arts. And her students love the subject.

"We were reading a folktale," she says. And we were reviewing the setting, characters, and main idea of a story."

These youngsters make big strides during their time with Ms. Zamor.

She says, "We progress monitor them every week. We had students here reading 45 words per minute at the beginning of the year. Now they're reading 130.  And they're really excited about it. They can't wait to show us what they learned. So, it's rewarding. I love doing what I do."

This teacher's dedication goes beyond these school walls.  Far beyond.  You never know where she'll show up.

"If you want to know the truth, I go to their houses," she says.  They all know me. I drop by and I let their moms know that they need to be reading for at least 15-20 minutes a day."

That's right. She does whatever it takes to keep the kids on task.

"So when I leave here every day, me and Ms. Cofer, we drive by all of their houses and then we make sure that they're inside.  When they see us they usually run.  Yeah. And we stop and we knock on the door and we let the parents know that they need to be reading 15-20 minutes before they can go outside."

Great job Marina Zamor.  An outstanding educator at Hornsby and an outstanding member of our community.

She says, "This is really rewarding. This is all I love to do.  The kids are what I love. Everything else doesn't matter to me. The kids, they know it. This is my blessing. This was my calling. I was a nursing major and I didn't really like the death situation and these kids bring me to life."
