Prosecution rests in Grant Hayes trial

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The state rested its case against Grant Hayes on Thursday in dramatic fashion, showing a Wake County jury video of Hayes browsing and buying a saw blade and trash bags at a Raleigh Walmart around the time Laura Jean Ackerson was murdered.

A Walmart manager who helped Hayes browse the saw section testified Thursday.

"He was wanting to know what the longest saw blade there was, that would fit a jig saw," she said.

The state also played a rap song written and recorded by Hayes, titled, "Broomstick Rider,"  which prosecutors say was about killing Ackerson.

Some of the lyrics were:

  • "I'm paying the bills. Find another sugar daddy..."
  • "I got two kids by you. ... I can't take anymore from you."
  • "I warned you, well, don't say I didn't warn you."

Hayes swayed to the music while the song was played in court.

Hayes and his wife, Amanda, are accused of luring Ackerson to their apartment in the summer of 2011, strangling Ackerson, dismembering her body and dumping the remains in a Texas creek.

The Hayes defense claims Amanda is the killer, and Grant Hayes simply helped cover up the crime.

Hayes and Ackerson were in a custody dispute over the two children they had together.
