Mom, child die after Kingsport house fire; mom gives gift of life

Posted: Updated:

Henley Dunbar, 3, died in a house fire on Rosetree Lane in Kingsport Tuesday. Firefighters say his mother, Nikki Dunbar tried to shield him from the flames. She was pronounced brain dead in the hospital room at Holston Valley Medical Center Wednesday.

Nikki's family says she is now giving the gift of life, by having her organs donated to others.

They say the decision carries on the legacy of the type of person she was.

Firefighters say it's the first fatal fire to happen in Kingsport in more than 6 years.

The Kingsport fire department arrived at Rosetree Lane a little after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday after a passerby spotted flames coming out of the house.

Firefighters entered the house from the back, searching for anyone inside. That's when they found the small child and his mother.

Firefighters say there were no smoke detectors found in the home, which they say can make all the difference in saving a life.

Family members shared photos of the fire victims with News Channel 11 and told us the Dunbars have two other children.

A cause in the fire has not been determined.

An account to help the family with funeral expenses and necessities has been set up at the Bank Of America in Kingsport. Donations can be made to Teresa M. Dollar, Nikki Dunbar's mother.
