Mandatory spay/neuter debate unfolds in Pinellas

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

A group advocating a mandatory spay/neuter ordinance in Pinellas County will take their case before the Pinellas County Commission today.

A workshop from 1 to 5 o'clock in the afternoon is to consider the financial challenges and budget for Pinellas Animal Services, but the public will be allowed to speak.

The proposal is to force all pet owners to sterilize their dogs and cats by a certain age, usually 4-6 months. Those who don't comply face fines. There would be exceptions for breeders, service dogs, hunting dogs, etc.

Not everyone agrees this is the best way to limit the number of unwanted pets in the county,

"I think that it's good intentions, but instead of mandatory spay and neuter I think they should have responsible dog owner classes," said Alicia Morrison, a dog owner. "If you're going to be a responsible dog owner, you're not going to let your dog run free to get together with any other dog."

Morrison has two male Rottweilers. When the younger one, Lueger, became aggressive, she neutered him so that the older more docile dog, Riddick, would be the Alpha male. She believes forcing her to have both dogs neutered would create problems in her household.
