Driver falls asleep, strikes pole in Tampa

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A driver fell asleep behind the wheel, drove off the road and hit a pole in Tampa early Monday morning, Tampa police said.

According to the police report, the driver was going north down Nebraska Avenue, when she fell asleep and left the roadway near East Bryan Street. She hit a telephone pole. Officers said, she was not injured.

Officials said, the pole broke off at the base but was suspended by the hanging electric wires. When TECO crews responded to the scene, they said the pole couldn't be repaired, they would have to replace it.

Officials closed Nebraska Avenue for a few hours because of the low-hanging wires from East 19th Avenue to East Forest Street. The roadways opened for traffic about 7 a.m.
