NC has record season in sea turtle nests

Posted: Updated:
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

North Carolina wildlife officials say it's been a record year for loggerhead sea turtle nests, and the season isn't over yet.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports that 1,211 of the nests have been documented along North Carolina's beaches. More than 50 nests of other species of sea turtles have also been observed.

Matthew Godfrey of the North Carolina Sea Turtle Project says it's the highest number seen in a single season since standardized monitoring began statewide in the mid-1990s.

But he says he doesn't know why the numbers are high - whether it's a blip or a long-term gain.

Godfrey says that's why ongoing monitoring is important.

As the season closes, hatchlings are emerging from their nests and making a dash to the ocean.
