Port Richey city manager keeps job after DUI

Posted: Updated:
PORT RICHEY, FL (WFLA) -

Port Richey's city manager was back on the job today, one day after the city council voted to keep him in his current position.

Tom O'Neill was arrested on a DUI charge, after he was found sleeping behind the wheel of his vehicle in July.

He even tried to hand in his resignation last night.

Councilwoman Nancy Britton told O'Neill, "I am not going to accept this letter that you are retiring; I think you are a great city manager and I am not accepting this."

The council, by 4-1 margin, voted to suspend O'Neill, rather than terminate him over the DUI charge.

Mayor Eloise Taylor told reporters, "the range of options for this city and other cities ranges from doing nothing to termination and it depends upon the facts of the case and circumstances, and this is how this council wanted to proceed."

The majority of the council voted for a 30 day suspension for the city manager, a suspension that won't actually take effect until November."

Councilman Terrence Rowe was the only member not to vote for the suspension.

Rowe said, "I am disappointed with the council, it is the council's decision, and that is how we proceed. and that's all I have to say at this time."

But other Port Richey residents have a lot to say, many of them agreeing with the council's decision.

Dan Semirosum said, "He did a good job and he is still probably doing a good job, what he did off the job I don't think it is going to affect his job, so I don't think he should be terminated for it."

New Port Richey resident Marie Farrel added, "I think it is fair, I think it is fair that he has the 30 day suspension, yes."

So with the backing of the council, O'Neill has will remain on the job, as he awaits his DUI trial.
