Poll: National image of North Carolina drops

Posted: Updated:

North Carolina's national image has shifted toward the negative, according to a new poll by Raleigh's Public Policy Polling.

Two years ago, PPP did national polls on the favorability of every state. North Carolina was an exception among Southern states in that it polled among the top 10 most popular states, with 40 percent in the poll giving it a favorable response and only 11 percent giving an unfavorable opinion.

But a recent poll found a different story. North Carolina's favorable rating dropped to 30 percent and its share of voters with an unfavorable opinion jumped to 23 percent. PPP said the poll was a random sampling of 803 registered voters from across the country and had a margin of error of 3.5 percent. The poll was done by automatic phone calls.

The state's national image has seen large declines with racial minorities and women, the polling outfit said.

  • Among blacks,  2011 North Carolina stood out in the South as a state African-Americans had a positive opinion of, at a 42/8 favorability rating. Now blacks see it negatively by a 19/30 spread.
  • Hispanics  gave the state a positive 50/9 favorability in 2011, and now it's a negative one at 20/39.
  • Women gave the state a net +32 favorability in 2011 at 40/8, but that's dropped all the way down to +3 at just 25/22.

PPP said that North Carolina's national image has taken the biggest hit among Democrats, which would be no surprise given the fact that the Republicans now hold political power. The Democrats' view of North Carolina has dropped a net 38 points from +18 (35/17) to -20 at 18/38 now.

Among Republicans, North Carolina went from a +42 favorability at 48/6 in 2011 to +28 at 41/13.
