A local guidance counselor is trying to help fill the stomachs of hungry children in Lincoln County. But to do it, she needs your help. WJBF News Channel 6's Barclay Bishop has more.
This grassroots effort was started by Taylor Fulcher, the guidance counselor at Lincoln County Middle School. Fulcher says about 450 of the 1,200 students at the elementary, middle and high schools, receive either free or reduced priced lunches. But when they go home, some of them may not receive 3 meals a day. "Saturday Sacks' would send each child who qualifies, a brown bag meal to use for the weekend. But to make that happen, a large amount of consistent donations will be needed.
"Ideally, you know I want to be able to meet the needs of every child," said Taylor Fulcher, Guidance Counselor at Lincoln County Middle School and Organizer of "Saturday Sacks." "At first I'm just going to take commitments as they come and go into a first come, first serve basis. And I'm hoping that we'll get enough commitments where every child to go home on the weekends with food who needs it. That's really the most important thing to me, that every kid at the elementary, middle and high school level gets that sack on Fridays and they're able to come back the next week and expect to have another one."
"One of our beliefs is that our students should be involved in our community, and our community should be involved in our schools, and this is a perfect example of that to where the community is being involved in our schools," said Brian Campbell, Lincoln County Superintendent. "Our vision involves teaching our kids small town values. For someone like Ms. Fulcher to come in and provide this type of service, we think that definitely exemplifies our small town values and helping our kids go home on the weekends."
