Edgefield Considers New Sales Tax: What Would One Percent Sales Tax Pay?

Posted: Updated:
Edgefield County, SC -

Edgefield County Council is considering a one percent capital sales tax that would add one percent tax to everything you buy in Edgefield County.

So, here's a loaded question for people who purchase in Edgefield County:  Is anything worth paying out another one percent of your paycheck?

I think we're paying enough," says John Stevens.  "Don't you?  What do you think?  I think we're paying enough, you pay on your plates every year, what are you going to do."

Paying up an extra percent probably isn't something taxpayers want to do, but there are a lot of things  a lot of them want, or at least need.  The county improvement plan lists some bridges and roads as dangerous and inadequate; to fix them takes money, several hundred thousand dollars. So do you want them fixed or do you pay enough?

"They do need to fix the roads and I do pay enough, darned if you do, darned if you don't," says Brenda Robinson.

The council chairman estimates the one percent tax would raise $900,000 per year.

"I think one percent more won't hurt," says Florence Creasy. "We waste that much money, a lot of us do, just spending.  If you're going to do the roads and help the sheriff have more cars and equipment, I don't mind."

The sheriff's office - first things first, it is secure, but that said:

"We have maintenance issues going on all the time," says Captain Chris Wash.  "Every year money is spent on it to put a band-aid on it to not get shutdown by the state."

Other items include more worn out roads, and issues with ambulances.  But some taxpayers say, they're already paying, why pay another one percent?

"It should be already be done with what's already taken, it's kind of redundant to just add another one percent," says Janet Alexander.

Edgefield County Council members are discussing forming a committee of taxpayers to evaluate the county's needs and decide what needs to be fixed. Then, taxpayers would have the chance to vote in November 2014 if it's worth the money.
