Girl says Rue21 employee told her she’s too fat to shop

Posted: Updated:

A teen in Oregon says a birthday trip to the mall ended with disrespect because of her appearance.

Now the store says they are trying to figure out what happened.

14-year-old Shelby Buster thought her first time shopping without her mom would be fun.

"Me and my friends were walking around the mall -spending my birthday money and my mom was sitting in the food court," Shelby said.

She says they went to the Rue21 clothing store and received a birthday surprise she never expected.

"I walked in and the lady at the front counter said hey you're too big to be in this store, I need you to leave," Shelby said.

Shelby says her friend was already in the back of the store at this point – looking at perfume.

"And so she checked out and we walked back and my mom came back to talk to them and they were like 'oh we're so sorry," Shelby said.

A Rue21 district manager told CNN affiliate KEZI they were aware of the situation and are currently looking into it.

Shelby's mom had her and her friend Jennica write down exactly what happened – to document what took place.

"Seriously, that's disrespectful and rude just because I'm bigger than you guys are, or I'm not a 14 or smaller, makes no sense why they would do that," Shelby said.

The district manager said the store is pulling video footage to try and figure out what happened.

"This made no sense to me and they should just have more respect, just to refrain from insulting people like me and stuff," Shelby said.

The store told KEZI the company does not tolerate discrimination.

Both Shelby and her mom are still waiting for a response.
