Tandem bike hit & run driver to face judge

CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) -

The Clearwater Police Department said they have made an arrest in the deadly hit and run accident involving a tandem bicycle on the Memorial Causeway on Monday.

Chief Anthony Holloway announced police have arrested 29-year-old Christopher Weed of Dunedin Tuesday night. He says a tip from Crimestoppers and someone on the beach led to the arrest.

Detectives say they found Weed's pickup truck in his back yard. They say Weed's story was fuzzy at best.

"He was working. He got off from work and that's all he can remember. He woke up, when he woke up later, he was taking a shower," he said.

Earlier Tuesday CPD identified the victims of the accident.

Police said Tuesday, Robert W. Lemon died of his injuries. Hillary Michalak is still at the hospital in critical condition.

A passing driver noticed the tandem bicycle on the road shoulder Monday morning and called the police. Officers found Lemon and Michalak later in the grass. Paramedics took them to local hospitals.

The couple lived together in an apartment at the Madison at Largo apartment complex. Michalak worked with children at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Seminole. Lemon managed a Largo bike store called Ride N' Roll Cyclery. The two had gotten a tandem bike in order to spend more time together.

They'd gotten up early Monday morning to ride before it got too hot.

Other riders passing the scene stopped to look and had emotional responses.

"It's scary, in this community," said Greg Seymour. "It's sad. I don't know how you hit somebody and not know."
