Sometimes we forget just how fortunate we are to be able to put on a few extra layers when it's cold out, or turn up the heat. But for our troops overseas, fighting in freezing temperatures, they aren't that lucky. WJBF News Channel 6's Barclay Bishop has more on a way you can help.
Operation Hand-Warmer gets underway, Wednesday, September 4th. And that's exactly what they're asking people to donate...something as simple as hand warmers. When the troops are over in Afghanistan fighting, temperatures can easily drop 20 degrees below freezing. Hand warmers can be used when gloves can't be, especially for those who use guns, when gloves would get in the way.
"They can't pop into a McDonald's and get a cup of coffee and hold it in their hands," said Bert Dean, Operation Hand-Warmer Organizer. "These hand warmers in certain situations, and toe warmers, make the difference between literally being able to function and not function in a combat situation."
Last year more than 30,000 hand warmers were collected. There are plenty of other items that are being accepted as donations as well. Donations will be collected through Monday, September 30th.
