Backlash is growing against a Montana judge and the light sentence delivered for the sexual assault of a teenage girl.
The judge also made comments suggesting the victim was to blame.
Montana District Court Judge G. Todd Baugh sentenced 54-year old Stacey Dean Rambold.
Rambold pleaded guilty to having a sexual relationship with Cherise Moralez
back in 2007 when she was just 14 years old. According to the law she was
incapable of consent.
Just before her 17th birthday, Cherise committed suicide while waiting for
the case to go to trial.
On Monday, Judge Baugh sentenced Rambold to 15 years in prison... but
suspended all but 31 days of it... after making a surprising statement in
Cherice's mother says Baugh told the courtroom her daughter was "as much in
control of the situation" as Rambold... and "seemed older than her
With so much backlash... the judge apologized.
Several online petitions are now demanding his resignation... and many want
the ruling reversed.
Judge Baugh has refused.
The Yellowstone County Attorney's office is now reviewing the sentence.
for a possible appeal.
It believes the minimum sentence should have been two years.
