Cary High on alert after student hit by car in crosswalk

Posted: Updated:
CARY, N.C. -

Ever since a Cary High School senior was struck by a car while biking across the school's main crosswalk, students, parents, police and administrators have been trying to find ways to safeguard the busy crosswalk on Walnut Street.

This week, students have seen a big change at the crossing area following the accident. School administrators have been stopping cars while acting as crossing guards to help students pass.

Students who witnessed the accident said it was horrifying to watch.

"She (the driver) is looking down and he's in the middle of the crosswalk and she looks up and kind of looks taken aback." said Meli Markham, a junior at Cary High School. "(The driver) hits him and he's flying up on the windshield and the windshield shatters and his leg like snaps. He flies back off he's laying several feet in front of the car."

Stephanie Watkins, a senior at Cary High, said, "I get scared now. I have to cross with somebody I know."

Cary High Principal Nolan Bryant said he's working with parents and police to safeguard the crosswalk.

"We're trying to increase our manpower here at this site. Just to try and get them safely across the road," Bryant said.

The principal also mentioned he's going to request a traffic study from the Department of Transportation to see if there's a way to get a pedestrian stop light installed by the pedestrian crosswalk.
