Officer suspended in video recording incident

WILMINGTON, N.C. -

A Leland police officer who charged a teenager who recorded an arrest on video has been suspended for a month without pay.

Police Sgt. John Keel arrested 19-year-old Gabriel Self last week. Self was recording the officer arresting another man for possession of drug paraphernalia at a gas station.

Leland's town manager David Hollis says citizens cannot interfere with police in their work, but police cannot prevent them from taking pictures or video.

According to the video, Keel told Self to leave and Self went inside the gas station and continued recording. He was charged with resisting a police officer, but the charge has been dropped.

Self says the suspension was a bit harsh and all he wanted was a handshake and an apology.
