Augusta, GA -

Annie Williams has lived and voted at Peabody Apartments for 17 years.

But Peabody is on the Board of Elections hit list to be shut down as a polling site.

And those who vote here would instead cast ballots at Crawford Avenue Church, more than a mile away.

"I don't want to close it, said Williams.

Did you know about this were you aware of this

No this is my first of it," said Williams.

"I think that's awful I think we should stay here," said Patricia Pendleton another Peabody Resident.

And it's not just Peabody that would close, also St. John Towers where the residents make up a big share of the polling places 748 voters.

The planned closing the polling site was the talk of the building for many voters, who under the proposed plan vote at May Park about one mile away.

"I wish the committee or whoever would not do it because there are people here who can't go away where else there's no transportation," says Sarah Garner, a long time resident.

Close somebody who's a little younger and more agile we have the perfect room to have the voting place," said Dorothy Wolfe.

"I don't drive, and the walking I have a bad knee so it would not be convenience for me to go to May Park," said Mary Wolfe.

Elections Director Lynn Bailey says she's aware that the change will inconvenience voters, and says the office will target those who are polling places close to let them know they can vote by mail.

"In those areas like St John Towers, and Peabody Apartments we'll make an extra special effort to make sure the residents there we aware of the opportunity to receive a mail ballot," said Bailey.

"What would you rather do vote absentee or vote here,"

"I'd rather vote here," said William.

"I don't like that I like to mingle so I really wish they wouldn't do that I wish they would reconsider and think about us," said Mary Wolfe.

The Elections Board will hold a public hearing in October before making any final decision on the poll site closings.
