Residents near New River warned of loud explosions

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -
Officials at the Camp Lejeune are warning nearby residents that they might hear periodic explosions as unexploded ordnance is destroyed.
Marine Corps spokesman Nat Fahey says the explosions are scheduled for Thursday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. near the training area of Camp Geiger and its old entrance gate off U.S. 17. There will be explosions on Friday and Saturday during the same time frame near the F-5 range off N.C. 24 east of Piney Green Road.
Fahey says Marines are blowing up mostly old rifle and rocket grenades or mortar rounds used on the training ranges. The spokesman says many are training or inert rounds, but some could be high-explosive, so they are all being safely detonated before planned construction in the area.
