A proposal that would ban shrimp boats from trawling in North Carolina's rivers and sounds is facing an uphill effort.
The Marine Fisheries Commission meets in Raleigh on Thursday to decide the fate of a petition seeking rules declaring most internal coastal waters as seafood nursery areas off limits to trawlers. The rule would have the effect of stopping most shrimping.
The fishing and seafood industries have hammered the idea in lower-level committees, warning it could lead to the loss of thousands of jobs aboard the shrimp boats and in related businesses.
Supporters blame shrimpers' massive nets for collecting and killing millions of fish in the inshore waters where juvenile sea creatures grow up.
