HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

The new school year got off to a terrifying start for one Holly Springs parent.

John Beimler tried to call a Wake County Schools hotline to report his daughter missing, but received a busy signal instead.

Beimler's 9-year-old daughter's bus from Washington Elementary School was 45 minutes late dropping her off Monday afternoon, Beimler said.

He really started to worry after realizing his neighbor's children, who rode the same bus, were already home. That's when Beimler said he tried to call the Wake County Schools transportation hotline.

When prompted to dial a number to report a missing child, it lead to a busy signal several times in a row.

"It was terrifying because at that point I didn't know where she was, if she was on the bus," Beimler said. "She didn't seem to be at school, but I didn't know where she was -- somewhere between here and there."

Beimler said he also tried calling the school, but he said he was unable to get in touch with the transportation department.

His daughter, Grace, did eventually show up.

"The bus driver actually just drove past her stop," Beimler said. "When she told the bus driver that's where she was supposed to get off, [the driver] didn't hear her or whatever.

"She left the neighborhood, finished the route, and after she finished the route she still had a kid on the bus, so she brought her home."

A Wake County Schools spokeswoman said she was not able to replicate the phone issue. WNCN also tried to replicate the issue Monday evening, but did not encounter the problem.

Overall, the school system reports complaints about busing are down from last year.

As of 7:00 p.m. Monday, Wake Schools reports 2,175 complaints out of 75,000 riders.

Wake Schools now offers live updates on bus locations here.
