RALEIGH, N.C. -

Residents of the Camden Crest Apartments in Raleigh began returning home Monday to see what was left of their apartment complex after a fire heavily damaged it.

The large fire tore through the roof of the apartments on Manor Valley Court Saturday night.

The complex has both smoke alarms and a sprinkler system; however, some residents said the sprinkler system did not activate.

The management at Camden Crest said it believes the sprinklers did go off, citing wet animals that were seen leaving the building after being rescued.

Firefighters could or would not say Monday if the sprinklers were working properly or not. Nor could they say what caused of the fire.

According to fire inspection records for Camden Crest, the complex has been cited for a host of routine violations over the past few years. But in a most recent inspection report from June 2013, investigators did cite the complex as a whole for having too many broken emergency lights.

It is unclear if those were fixed before Saturday's fire.

Saturday, residents shared what happened.

Cameron Beam said, "I'm 21 and I never had anything like this happen before."

"Life can change in an instant and you just got to appreciate what the most important things in life are," added Leonard Windham, who has lived at Camden Crest for a year.

The Red Cross helped the victims with basic necessities and to find temporary shelter.

The apartment management said it is working to place displaced residents in other empty units or at nearby complexes.
