Leesville Road High student dies after moped crash

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A student from Leesville Road High School died Friday from injuries suffered during a traffic collision Aug. 23 in Durham.

According to family posting on a Facebook prayer page, Nick Niedrich, 17, died Friday.

Authorities said the moped Niedrich was driving was traveling east on T.W. Alexander Drive near Cedar Grove Road around 10:15 p.m. when it sideswiped a Toyota Camry.

The collision caused Niedrich to fall off the vehicle, police said.

Nick's mother, Hope Niedrich, posted on the "Pray for Nick" page, "It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our son and brother Nicholas Niedrich.

"He fought a tough fight but was unable to overcome the severity of his head injury and has gone home to be with God. His joy and laughter will be greatly missed!"

She said a memorial service and celebration of his life will be held Sunday at Covenant Church International at 12621 Strickland Road in Raleigh. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. and the memorial service will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

A GoFundMe site has already raised more than $3,500 for the family's expenses.
