JOHNSTON, SC (WJBF) - When the Strom Thurmond rebels host Silver Bluff in week one of the high school football season, they will do so with just 7 returning starters.
Luckily for coach Lee Sawyer, those 7 returners are all playmakers including senior quarterback Jauveer Hammond. In 2012, Hammond led the Rebels with 1,674 yards through the air and 1,258 yards rushing accounting for 35 touchdowns.
Hammond is prepped for another big year, but he will have to carry the load behind an inexperienced offensive line that features four new faces up front.
"Right now, they're trying to produce and get better and stronger," Hammond said. "I think they're going to come together very well."
About Hammond coach Sawyer adds, "If you're only going to return four starters on the offensive side of the ball, you want your quarterback to be one of them. And we're lucky that we got a big time playmaker back there."
