thursday, U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) announced that the Augusta Regional Airport (AGS) would receive a grant totaling $568,401 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to update the existing master plan to help identify future needs of the facility.

"Folks in our region are quickly realizing the benefit of having a first-class air terminal just a stone's throw away," said Congressman Barrow.  "It's important for our airport to remain competitive as the needs of the businesses and individuals in our community continue to grow.  This grant provides a great opportunity to evaluate the future needs of our airport, and I'll continue to work to ensure our region is equipped to support our community's needs."

"We are very grateful to Congressman Barrow for his support in securing the funding to move forward with our Master Plan update," said Gary LeTellier, Executive Director, Augusta Regional Airport. "With the strong growth the Airport has seen since 2006 and only 1,400 acres available we have to be cautious about how we use our land. A master plan is an important tool in land use planning and in identifying our development needs moving forward."

In 2012, AGS had its best year ever for passengers traveling through the airport. More than 550,000 passengers used the airport, surpassing the previous record from 2011 by more than 14,000 travelers. Since 2006, according the AGS, traffic increased by 106 percent.

The airport last updated their master plan in 2001.
