An ultra-modern school will open next week to students in Chapel Hill on a site with a deep history.
Northside Elementary is named for the school that once sat in the same spot and served as a school for African-American students before integration.
That history is displayed within the school through a commemorative wall and trophy cases. The new school was a reason Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools needed to re-district -in order to fill it.
The school features modern green features, and the shades on the outside of windows reflect light inward andup toward ceilings instead of at the students' desks.
