Health Watch: Avoiding back problems with backpacks

Posted: Updated:

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says More than 24,000 people were treated in U.S. hospitals and doctors' offices for backpack-related injuries in 2012.

Chiropractor Dr. Jay Brodwyn of Columbus says postural defects now from heavy backpacks can become permanent later.

"The heavier it gets the kids carry it low down on their hips and the lower it is, the more they're going to lean back and the more they have to compensate."

Health officials say the problem isn't always the amount of weight the kids are carrying, but how the bags are packed.

Children should carry no more than 10 to 15 percent of their body weight in backpacks.
