Durham man charged in 3 American Tobacco Trail robberies

DURHAM, N.C. -

A Durham man arrested earlier this month in connection with a robbery on the American Tobacco Trail has been charged with two additional robberies.

Derrick Wells, 22, of Otis Street, was charged Aug. 2 with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the June 18 robbery of two men on the trail.

Tuesday, investigators filed additional charges against Wells in connection with robberies on the trail on July 5 and July 16.

Wells was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the July 5 incident. He was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault on a female in connection with the July 16 incident.

On June 18, two men were walking on the trail between Otis Street and Fayetteville around 5:20 p.m. when two males approached them and robbed them at gunpoint. The suspects took $4 and a phone from the victims.

On July 5, a male victim told officers he was on the American Tobacco Trail near Otis Street around 1:20 p.m. when a man approached him and robbed him at gunpoint of a phone and an MP3 player.

And on July 16, a female was rollerblading on the American Tobacco Trail around 7:15 p.m. when a man armed with a gun approached her and took her phone.

Wells is being held in the Durham County Jail under a $600,000 bond.
