Commissioners want answers before approving more money for Laney Walker neighborhood and Bethlehem neighborhood improvement projects.
They approved $8 million for renovations of the historic neighborhoods three years ago, and now the Augusta Housing Department needs another $2.5 million to finish the work.
The city can't bond the money for another two years, so the department is seeking a loan.
Before Commissioners approve that, they want to know how the $8 million is being spent.
"Before we loan, or give somebody, two and a half million dollars, there's got to be some accountability. I don't think a vote needs to be taken tonight. He has to show us what money has already been spent and show us why this two and a half million dollars are needed at this time," says Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle, who chairs the Finance Committee.
Housing and neighborhood development officials say the $2.5 million will help pay for development of 25 new units and also pay for $285,000 for marketing the project.
