Surviving a Bear Attack

A 12-year old girl is attacked by a bear and lives to tell about it.

It turns out SHE did everything WRONG.

Experts say that this young lady is lucky to be alive and they explain what you should do if you ever find yourself face to face with a big bear.

Linsey Davis reports.

Abby Wetherell was going for her evening jog when she spotted it: a black bear like this one.

"I was thinking oh my gosh this is it, I'm not gonna live."

The 12 year olds survival instincts kicked in instantly.

"I take off running from the direction I came from all of a sudden, the bear got me; put me down on the ground and started, like, scraping me and clawing me. and then I got away."

But the bear pounced again... that's when Abby had an idea.

"So I was, like, petting it.  I don't know where that came from.  But, I just thought maybe if I petted it, it would like me!

Well, that did not work"

So, she tried something else...

"And then I heard that you should play dead. So that's what I did. and then it kind of went away and then it looked back and then it just took off."

Rescuers told Abby she was lucky to be alive...because playing dead is exactly what they tell people not to do.

"Bears actually eat dead animals, so you don't want to play dead.  If you see them make a lot of noise never try to outrun, they will out run, out climb you.  They're great swimmers great climbers, great runners."

Abby says she's not letting the attack get her down

"It was a freak thing but it's over. But, I'm not going to go in the woods without anybody, but I'm still going in the woods.  I'm, I'm okay and I'll  be all right."
