Aliso Viejo, CA -

A California boy returned from a family vacation last month with an unusual souvenir when a sea snail egg grew and hatched inside his knee.

Paul Franklin's parents admit they did not think much of it when their 4-year-old son scraped his knee while playing on the beach during a recent camping trip. His father, Ken Franklin, said they cleaned it up and put a band-aid on it.

But he said, a couple of weeks later, his son's knee became swollen and infected.

Paul's parents took him to the doctor who prescribed antibiotics with fears that his wound was badly infected with a dangerous strain of Staph. The antibiotics helped but the wound failed to heal. That's when Paul's mother, Rachael, said she had enough when she came home one day and discovered that her son's knee had ballooned to the size of an orange.

Then last Thursday, Rachael noticed the spot on Paul's knee was turning black. After close examination, she decided to drain the wound. That's when she got a shock.

Paul's mother said she pulled out a weird looking rock that had swirls on it from her son's knee, but when she turned it over, that's when she noticed it was a sea snail.

Despite the unnerving ordeal, Paul's parents say they are relieved. They also say Paul's wound is almost completely healed.
