RTP job fair rescheduled

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of job seekers hoping for a chance at getting their livelihoods back arrived at a job fair Monday to find out it had been cancelled.

"I have my PhD so I really want to teach but it has been very difficult to get that type of opportunity. I thought I'd be able to speak to someone face to face, just to get that opportunity," said job seeker, Telika Wiggan.

The National Career Fairs event was scheduled for Monday from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Radisson Hotel Research Triangle Park, 150 Park Drive.

Monday the state Commerce Department announced an increasing jobless rate in North Carolina.

Amidst the news released Monday of an increasing NC jobless rate, as many as 400 job seekers were expected to make trip in order to face to face with employers.

Nearly 20 employers were scheduled to participate including Time Warner Cable, Express Professionals Staffing, Aflac and Aaron's.

Some job seekers like Sylvester Harold traveled from out of state.

"We came from Buffalo, New York and it is frustrating because we spent a lot of money to get here."

Upon arrival, Harold and others learned the event had been cancelled due to miscommunication on the event's date between National Career Fairs and the hotel. The room named for the event was already taken.

Peggy Hillman with National Career Fairs tells WNCN they learned about the scheduling conflict when their organizers arrived at the venue Monday morning.

"They're saying it just came to light at 9:30am this morning that this thing wasn't going to take off. I said, ‘the person who dropped the ball on this should be out here with us looking for employment. Then, they'd see the seriousness of being unemployed,'" said Harold.

"We are very sorry and we are trying to accommodate (job seekers) in any ways we can. It is just an unfortunate mistake. We're not pointing fingers," said Radisson Hotel Research Triangle Park's General Manager, Ron Hunter.

Hillman took full responsibility for the mistake and said it is not the hotel's fault.

"In the 13 years that I've been doing career fairs this is the first time I've seen this happen," said Hillman.

"It is disheartening when we come down here and something like this happens," said Harold.

"It is a little discouraging but we'll stay positive because if a door closes, a window opens and if a window closes then a door opens so it's okay," said Wiggan.

National Career Fairs has rescheduled Monday's job fair for Monday, September 23rd from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Radisson Hotel Research Triangle Park, 150 Park Drive, Research Triangle Park, NC, 27709.
