BRIDGEPORT, CT -

A new publication claims the Wright Brothers were not the first in flight in 1903 in North Carolina, but instead a German immigrant was the first to be airborne in 1901 in Connecticut.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed a bill into law recently stating that Bridgeport resident Gustave Whitehead was the first to accomplish powered flight in 1901, two years before the Wright brothers took flight in 1903, reported UPI.com.

The Wright brothers achieved a powered flight with their airplane on Dec. 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk.

The aeronautical journal "Jane's All the World's Aircraft" has officially recognized Whitehead as first in flight, citing eyewitness accounts, although other sources have disputed those eyewitnesses. One man who was supposedly an eyewitness called the story that Whitehead flew "imaginary."
