Keith Thomas has never had a home security system, because he’s never needed it.
“357 magnum, that's the only security system I’ve had,” said Keith.
But in June, when an ADT dealer came knocking with a good deal, Keith couldn’t refuse. He had the new security system installed June 18th.
Keith says they even worked out a plan for the first payment.
“End of the month, I didn't want no more money taken out of my bank account and they promised me it would be the next month. Well, it was the next day,” said Keith. “They put me in a very tight financial position.”
So he canceled, in writing, within the required three business days. Keith called to make sure they received it and says he was promised a refund of the $67 that was debited from his account within 14 days.
When that didn't happen Keith started calling.
“August the 5th, guaranteed you'll have your money August the 5th,” Keith said, describing one phone call to us.
When that didn’t happen, he called again and again.
“I've gotten the runaround so bad, my legs hurt,” said Keith.
We started by calling the same numbers Keith did, first to Secure Watch, the ADT dealer that sold Keith the system. They directed us to an 800 number for ADT Security Services.
And after several transfers we were directed to an ADT corporate office in Florida where we reached the company spokesperson, Sarah Cohn.
Within a few hours, Keith got a phone call saying his money was on its way.
“We are processing Mr. Thomas' refund, and will follow-up with him to ensure he receives his credit.” Cohn told us in an email statement.
That response is now bringing Keith some piece of mind and back to his old sense of security.
“I don't want to use Mr. 357 but you know,” said Keith, “I protect my youngins.”
Keith was able to successfully cancel his contract because of the three day right to cancel.
The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs tells us the rule applies to door to door sales, gym contracts, tennis and swim club contract, refinancing deals and credit repair contracts. Vacation time shares give you five days to cancel.
To cancel, you have to send in the request in writing. And get a mail or fax receipt to prove that you sent it in by the deadline.
